Fantasy Basketball Movers and Shakers – Week 4

Week 4 in the NBA reveals that there are a plethora of point guard options for your fantasy basketball team, a nice selection of middle-tier bigs but a severe lack of small forwards for your roster.  It’s something we’ve been tracking all season and depending on how your league grants position eligibility and other league-specific settings, you’ll probably be monitoring the waivers all season.  That’s the thing about fantasy basketball; you may add and drop the same player multiple times depending on injuries and effectiveness of play.

Small Forwards On the Wire
As mentioned before, wily veterans Jason Richardson of the Philadelphia 76ers has been able to shake off the rust and contribute nightly in point and steals.  He’s averaged less than four rebounds a game, so look for that number to increase.  Assists are a facet of his game long gone; still, he’s owned in 90% of ESPN leagues –check to see if he has “3” eligibility in yours.

A Better Metta
As predicted before last week, Metta World Peace is enjoying a career resurgence, benefitting from Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo style offense.  He’s now averaging a sold 14 points a game and hitting nearly 40% from downtown. He’s hasn’t been this productive since leaving Houston
and Coach D’Antoni told the Orange County Register that the former Ron Artest will average in the neighborhood of 17-20 points a game.  This is great stuff for Metta World Peace owners or potential ones.  A sneaky trade to grab him may be a good strategy at such a thin position, regardless of what happens when Steve Nash comes back.  This team will have enough shots to go around.
Whereas two weeks before we told you to check out Mike Dunleavy, this week its Kyle Korver, small forward for the eternally under-the-radar Atlanta Hawks.  Always a three point specialist, Korver is hitting 43% from three-point land and is averaging 11 points a game.  On a team with such athletic bigs, Korver isn’t going to contribute much in boards but will grab you a steal nightly for what it’s worth.
Barnes Burner
Golden State’s rookie Harrison Barnes is another good look at the 3 spot and after a couple of single point performances he responded with a double-double against the T-Wolves Saturday night, giving him two-double doubles in his last four games.  He’s not owned in a majority of leagues and Richard Jefferson and Brandon Rush are out with injury.

Gee Whiz
Alonzo Gee of Cleveland is another hot add this week. A big 2-3 combo player Gee is getting consistent minutes with Cavs and has scored at least 14 points in five of his last six games.  He’s also added some unsuspected blocked shots.  He’ll get more minutes than otherwise projected because of Cleveland’s shortened rotation.

Other Notes
Aaron Brooks has grabbed control of the point guard starting sport for the Sacramento Kings.  He’s only a couple of seasons removed from averaging nearly twenty points for the Rockets.  He will help you primarily in points, assists and threes as long as he gets run.
Speaking of new starters, you may want to check out Markieff Morris who is now starting at power forward for the Phoenix Suns.  He doesn’t get the rebounds you would like, but he’ll score and knock down threes.
